Digital Forensics and Born-Digital Content in Cultural Heritage Collections

Written by Matthew G. Kirschenbaum, Richard Ovenden, and Gabriela Redwine, this report established the possibilities of using digital forensics tools developed by the law enforcement community in libraries, archive, and museums. The law enforcement community created tools to survey digital media, identify files, and preserve the provenance of any materials for use as evidence in criminal proceedings, not entirely dissimilar from the needs of cultural heritage organizations to acquire, process, and preserve born-digital collections.
