I ♥ Unicode

The practice of digital preservation often involves negotiating between an intended outcome and unexpected behaviors from the technologies involved. The impact of evolving standards, implementation decisions made in ancillary systems, and unintended use cases from throughout computing history often requires us to rethink our assumptions around system behavior, methods of validation, and our obligations surrounding the treatment of edge cases in the context of sustainable practices.

This talk will examine our process of identifying, troubleshooting, and fixing a system-spanning problem related to Unicode private use characters in filenames – and then doing it all over again in service of digital preservation goals.
