Mediating Access to BitCurator Data

BitCurator provides archives with helpful tools for accessing and analyzing data. However, the outputs of these tools (disk images, logs, etc.) can be hard to maneuver for patrons who might not know how to use things like a disk image or DSXML file. I’d like to propose some ways archives can “mediate” forensic data for ease of patron use:

1. Translate forensic outputs into plain language on finding aid
2. Extract and present files alongside file system info in lieu of a disk image
3. Select a subset of files and keep full forensic copy behind the scenes
4. Data visualization and summaries

Using these and other methods, archives using BitCurator and other forensic tools can offer researchers the full benefit of forensically-processed digital material while reducing confusion and technical barriers.
